I was very excited for todays shoot with Red Balloon as we were filming underwater. I am planning to book my open water PADI soon and videography + photography underwater courses so this was especially interesting to me. We used a Canon 5D Mark II with a fantastic waterproof housing that equalised underwater. The footage looked great, very sharp even though focus was a little tricky under the water. I camera assisted along side production assistant Rikki Udagawa but was also required for a bit of acting and was happy to get into the pool. This required a lot of holding my breath underwater swimming and waving at the camera looking very happy... in an office dress - Which was great fun! Mobile Media is a company that specialise in outdoor advertising and their latest van has an interactive screen on the side. The video Red Balloon will be putting together for them will look like a large tank with people swimming by with their logo to advertise the company. Overall the experience was very interesting and I cannot wait to be a qualified diver camera operator!

Today I finished my website complete with video and photography showreels and my blog. I had been wanting to make one for a while but was not sure how to go about it and was determined to make it myself. Once I had a little play around this week I got the hang of it I made my own. I'm really pleased with the final result and am happy to have an amazing domain name. Check it out www.jessicawilkens.com
Today I drove up to the British Marine Federation head office in Egham to assist Go Media filming a meeting with Managing Director Murray. The meeting included the boat show exhibitors to debate the upcoming Tullett Prebon London Boat Show. This was to highlight how the show is improving for both the exhibitors and the visitors and for the exhibitors to debate and have their queries answered and resolved. I assisted Stephen Hird with lighting and sound and had an interesting trip and better understanding of the work involved in the improvement of the Boat Shows.
Today I began the edit of my latest project. A Zumba promotional video for an amazing instructor Jenn Kieser. Instead of using my usual Final Cut Pro 7 I would give the Abode Suite a try as I love using Photoshop and have heard good things about it. Premiere Pro did not disappoint. It is very simple to use and editing is going smoothly. After a few twixtor tests I previously did on After Effects I decided to shoot some for the video on my cameras at 50fps and try out adding that into the project, which so far has been a great success. I have the track selected and am looking forward to continuing the edit.
This week I have been filming with Red Balloon assisting the shoot as grip and lighting. We have been filming in Poole at Streetwise and St. Leonards Hospital in Ringwood. Streetwise is a safety awareness centre that I remember from childhood. It is a studio of hazards for children to identify what they are and makes a great set. The shoot is for the NHS paramedic training videos and has been very interesting. Different scenarios have been recreated and the paramedics go through the procedure such as dealing with stabbings, amputees, motorbike crashes and child abuse. What the paramedics do has been fascinating to see and I have learnt so much about their profession. It was a very enjoyable shoot with a great group of people.
Now that I have finished university I thought it would be a great opportunity to make the most out of the university kit such as the jib and track before the end of term. I love going to Zumba every week so had a chat with Jenn, my Zumba Intstructor, and decided to make a promotional video for her website. Today I shot the promo video after a good session filming her class last night. Having played around with ideas over the last week my original idea was to film in a green screen studio making a similar effect to the Zumba Wii games. However the rooms were all booked out so we couldn’t do this. Instead we decided to go to Hengistbury Head and film over the sea front as Zumba is Latin originated and thought we would make the most of the beach and the forecast sunny weather. However after ten minutes of being on location the heavens opened and we could no longer maintain the happy sunny atmosphere. Luckily we managed to get a studio at Merick Park which was perfect with mirrors filling the walls. Though far from the original idea the footage looked fantastic and there is a lot of opportunity for twixtoring the footage that I shot on my DSLR at 50fps and the rest at a normal frame rate. Very excited to begin the edit!
I was very excited to find out that LoveLove Films completed the Yes Sir Boss – Not Guilty music video today. I assisted in shooting at the end of April for this interesting music video. The band were fantastic, talented and easy to get along with. We had an eventful two days. One we spent in the studio with the blue screen for the facial expressions for the animation and the other at Somerly House, a beautiful stately home, where we filmed the live action part of the video with the band playing live and tying up the baddie. The song has a strong message behind it too. The experience was great and having seen the test animation I had been looking forward to seeing its outcome. Hopefully soon the footage of the interviews and behind the scenes that I did will be up and we can see the making of! I am travelling to London Excel with Go Media’s Steve Adams to interview MD Murray from the BMF. This is to put together a video in anticipation of the upcoming Tullet Predon London Boat Show 2013. This year they have been working very hard to ensure that visitors and exhibitors get the most out of the boat show. However this was not the reason I found myself most excited to be assisting today. This is the first time I get to have a look at the new camera, the Canon C300. A beautiful camera, which after a little play appeared easy enough to operate, and a descent size. While looking over Steve’s footage from sailing I was amazed by the HD quality. Not only the new camera but a few more gadgets such as the slider and steady cam jacket, I cannot wait to have a go. Though the weather was terrible for the journey a successful day was had and I look forward to the next interview with Murray in the near future.
