Today I handed in my dissertation which is a massive relief. It is strange looking back to the very beginning and having the feel 10,000 words is very daunting however when you get writing, especially with a subject you enjoy, it is so hard to keep within those 10,000! Though I am happy to have finished I did very much enjoy writing my dissertation which was titled 'Identity and Control in Role Playing Video Games: The Relationship Between Player and Character'. The entire process was interesting from researching theorists work, to doing my own case studies of five very different people including myself playing the game ‘Oblivion’ and the different levels of identity and control people feel. This was varied by so many factors such as platform, interface, skill and how they want to be viewed in the gaming world through their avatar. This led me onto my final chapter about C. Jung a psychologist who studied archetypal imagery and the unconscious. So that really players can be putting themselves into characters without being consciously aware which I found related to gaming very well. I see my gaming experience in a whole new light and have really enjoyed getting a better understanding of how I relate to my avatar and the control I have in the game world.
